The prospect of surgery can be daunting.
I aim to diagnose your problem and clearly explain it to you, avoiding too much medical terminology.
I will then discuss any further tests you may need (such as blood tests or scans) and treatment options. Treatment can be either non-surgical (painkillers, orthotics, physiotherapy, etc) or surgical. As a general principle, it is usual to try the non-surgical options first, but many patients have already done this by the time they see a surgeon. I take a no-pressure approach to help you decide what is best for you.
If surgery is the decision we arrive at together, then I explain the operation to you, again as plainly as possible, and tell you of the expected risks.
Following surgery I will see you every day if you are recovering in hospital, then again about 10 days after the operation for a wound check in the rooms.
You will usually need further follow-up, often about 6 weeks later, but this varies depending on what surgery you have had.
I try to make this an easy process, and to minimize the potentially intimidating nature of seeing a surgeon and having surgery.
