Close to the time of surgery, the anaesthetist will contact you, and decide with you what is the best type of anaesthetic for you. Often, a spinal anaesthetic is best, as it reduces the risk of blood clots. You can also have sedation with a spinal, so it is not stressful. You usually need a bladder catheter if you have a spinal anaesthetic.
